Six years ago, the Absa Kip Keino Classic was just another date on the global athletics calendar. Today, it stands as one of Africa’s most strategic sporting investments, powered by Absa Bank’s growing financial commitment, which has now crossed KSh 60 million as the event enters its seventh edition. Last year, athletics funding stood at KSh 50 million, underscoring the year-on-year growth of Kenya’s premier track and field events.

In 2026, the bank increased its athletics investment to KShs60 million, up from KShs50 million the previous year, with more than half of that funding allocated to the Kip Keino Classic, underscoring its growing commitment to the event.

According to meet director Barnaba Korir, the backing is already transforming the event’s global appeal.

“This year’s investment allows us to raise the level of competition and attract a higher-calibre international field. With Absa’s support, we are delivering a truly world-class event for both athletes and fans,” Korir said.

Korir added that the impact of the financial backing extends directly to performance, noting that improved funding has enabled upgrades to infrastructure, enhanced timing systems, and better overall conditions for athletes to compete at their best.

Beyond the finish line

A defining feature of Absa’s involvement is its focus on athlete welfare beyond competition. Through structured financial literacy programmes, the bank is equipping athletes with skills to manage earnings, often received in foreign currencies.

"We don’t just invest, we guide," Absa Bank Kenya Corporate Marketing Director Mwihaki Wachira explained.

"We teach athletes how to handle foreign exchange, when to convert, when to hold, and when to reinvest. We walk the journey with them. This ensures they can sustain themselves and their families long after their competitive years."

The Kip Keino Classic has also become a key driver of sports tourism and international visibility for Kenya. By attracting global stars and broadcast audiences, the event feeds into the wider economy—from hospitality to branding. “Athletics continues to put Kenya on the global map. The reach of events like the Kip Keino Classic translates into real economic value,” Wachira noted.

Beyond elite competition, Absa is widening its sport footprint through grassroots development and mass participation. City runs across four urban centres are helping nurture recreational running while strengthening the country’s deep-rooted athletics culture.

Through the Absa Kenya Foundation, launched in 2024, the bank is also investing in community projects spanning education, health, water access and entrepreneurship, creating a social impact far beyond stadium walls.

Looking ahead, Absa is exploring opportunities in team sports, but the Kip Keino Classic remains one of the bank’s flagship platforms where sport, finance and development intersect.
