The Kip Keino Classic has secured KShs35 million from Absa ahead of its seventh edition on 24th April at the Nyayo national stadium. The bank confirmed its continued backing at Thursday’s official launch of the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting.

“We’ve supported the Kip Keino Classic since its inception, and this year we have committed KSh35 million to the event,” said Absa Corporate Marketing Director Mwihaki Wachira.

“KShs27 million for Athletics Kenya rights fees and eight million for marketing and global promotion.”

The Kip Keino Classic is part of the bank’s wider investment in athletics this year, which totals KShs60 million, supporting a range of competitions and development initiatives. The one-day event is the second World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meet of the year. It will feature events across sprints, hurdles, middle distances and field disciplines for both men and women.

What fans can expect

Organisers say this year’s meeting will combine elite competition with innovation and a strong fan experience. Meet director Barnaba Korir says the event will showcase Kenyan talent on the global stage while attracting international attention.

“This is a platform for our athletes to shine, for fans to engage, and for Kenya to reaffirm its place on the world athletics map,” he said.

The meeting will be staged under floodlights at Nyayo national Stadium in Kenya’s capital Nairobi, which has a newly re-marked track. Wavelight pacing technology will be in use, alongside an evening schedule designed to draw post-work crowds.

Competition director Kennedy Tanui said the venue has been upgraded to meet international standards, creating ideal conditions for strong performances.

“Every track mark, implement and venue has undergone certification. Combined with favourable weather, this provides athletes with the perfect environment to deliver personal bests and national records,” added Tanui.

Sustainability focus

Sustainability measures will also form part of the event.

Wandji Ngongang, a research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, said air quality sensors will be installed at key venues to support athlete safety and long-term sustainability.

Korir adds that the wider ambition extends beyond competition.

“This event is not just about sport. It is about youth development, community empowerment and showcasing Kenya as a nation that values sport, the environment and social impact,” he said.

Absa’s backing is expected to strengthen the event’s global reach, supporting broadcast coverage, marketing and fan engagement while helping attract top international athletes.

Some of the confirmed athletes include reigning Olympic and World hammer champion Ethan Katzberg from Canada and Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala who will be counting on a partisan crowd at his home event in Nairobi.
