Shot put champ Mwangi revels in miracle win at Kip Keino Classic
National shot-put champion Peter Mwangi continued his dominance at the Kip Keino Classic when he emerged victorious at the fifth edition of the World Continental Tour Gold event at the Nyayo National Stadium on Saturday.
The Kenya Prisons officer took top honour with a score of 15.50 metres, ahead of Benson Maina Wachira who accumulated a season’s best of 15.34 as Leonard Bett finished third with 14.99 metres.
Mwangi admitted his win was a surprise to him considering his recent injury woes.
“I had an operation three months ago to remove my appendix, I did not expect a victory today I was coming to test my body and training. Managing to throw above 15m is more a miracle considering I have to twist my body a lot,” the three-time national champion said.
This is his third triumph in the five editions of Kip Keino Classic, having first won at the second edition where he threw 15.72 metres.
He followed it up with his best performance at the World Continental Tour Gold event to date, a throw of 16.25 metres at last year’s edition at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
