Race Against Time: Nairobi’s Nyayo Stadium Undergoes High-Stakes Certification Ahead of Kip Keino Classic
Nairobi, Kenya, March 24, 2026—With just weeks to the 7th Kip Keino Classic Continental Tour Gold, Nairobi’s Nyayo National Stadium is racing against time to meet global standards. Meet director Barnaba Korir is leading the charge, coordinating inspections, equipment checks, and certification to ensure every detail, from the newly renovated track to timing systems, is world-class ahead of Kenya’s premier Gold-level athletics meet.

“The Kip Keino Classic is not just a race; it is a statement. Every athlete, every implement, every timing system must be perfect. We are committed to delivering an experience that puts Kenya on the global athletics map,” Korir said during the inspection.
At the heart of the preparations, Korir is working closely with competitions director Kennedy Tanui and Sports Stadia Director General Timothy Kilimo to oversee a week-long technical certification process.
A Stadium Reborn, Now Under Scrutiny
Nyayo Stadium underwent significant renovations in recent months, including track resurfacing and upgraded athlete facilities. These improvements triggered the need for fresh certification under World Athletics standards to host a Gold-level meet.

A certified surveyor from Belgium is leading the inspection, assessing track measurements, field-event zones, and other infrastructure to ensure full compliance.
“Because of the upgrades, the stadium must be certified again. This ensures it meets global standards for a Gold-level event,” Tanui explained.
The week-long process involves three days of technical inspection on the track and two days compiling reports for submission to World Athletics, allowing officials to identify and correct any gaps before the event.
Leadership Perspective: Kilimo on Venue Readiness
Timothy Kilimo emphasized that every aspect of the stadium, from track quality to athlete facilities, must reflect global standards.
“While scheduling between football and athletics can be challenging, the government remains fully committed to supporting the Kip Keino Classic. Hosting such events is vital as we prepare our athletes for global competitions, and despite external disruptions affecting travel and budgets, we are working closely with all stakeholders to ensure the event’s success,” said Kilimo
Beyond the Track: Equipment and Compliance Checks

The certification extends beyond infrastructure. Officials are auditing timing systems provided by official partners and inspecting all competition implements, including hurdles, hammer cages, and throwing equipment.
“We are verifying that all timing equipment is fully compliant and operational. At the same time, every implement used in competition is being checked and certified,” Tanui noted.
Guaranteeing Global Recognition for Athletes
For athletes, certification is not just a formality—it ensures all times and distances are recognized globally.
“Once this process is complete, any performance here will be officially recognized by World Athletics. That is critical for athletes competing at the highest level,” Tanui said.
Despite the tight timeline, Korir remains confident:
“Our mission is clear: world-class organization for world-class talent. From start to finish, every detail counts because athletes deserve nothing less than excellence.”
Positioning Kenya on the Global Stage
Maintaining Gold-level status is vital for both the Kip Keino Classic and Kenya’s reputation as a global athletics powerhouse. Korir, Tanui, and Kilimo are aligned in their mission: every detail, every implement, every facility must reflect world-class standards.
“Hosting a Gold-level meet here is a testament to Kenya’s commitment to athletics. Our role is to ensure the venue is safe, world-class, and fully compliant, so athletes can focus solely on performance,” Kilimo said.
As inspections continue, Nyayo Stadium stands at the center of a high-stakes effort—one that will ultimately determine whether Nairobi delivers a truly world-class stage for record-breaking performances on April 24.
