Absa Bank’s Continued Investment Powers Kip Keino Classic into Sixth Edition

𝐍𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐛𝐢, 𝐊𝐞𝐧𝐲𝐚, 𝐌𝐚𝐲 𝟐𝟎, 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓: As the Kip Keino Classic Continental tour marks its sixth edition, Absa Bank has once again stepped up with significant financial backing, injecting over Ksh. 60 million into this year’s event.
The support includes Ksh. 40 million in rights fees and Ksh. 20 million allocated for event logistics and amplification support operations, solidifying Absa’s role as the event’s principal sponsor since its inception in 2020.
Absa’s long-term partnership with Athletics Kenya has been instrumental in elevating the event to global recognition on the World Athletics Continental Tour.
Over the past decade, Absa has invested more than Ksh. 1.1 billion in Kenya’s sports sector, helping to nurture talent, create platforms for competition, and strengthen the country’s reputation in international athletics.
“Beyond medals and world records, sports are a powerful unifying force and an economic catalyst,” said Mwihaki Wachira, Absa’s Director of Corporate Affairs and Marketing. “The Kip Keino Classic is more than a meet, it’s a celebration of Kenyan identity, pride, and potential. Our commitment is both financial and non-financial, aimed at growing sports as a driver of national transformation.”
Barnaba Korir, CEO of the Kip Keino Classic, acknowledged the bank’s sustained partnership, stating: “With Absa being the main supporter of athletics globally and particularly of this event, we have managed to build one of the most respected meets on the tour. Their consistent funding has allowed us to attract elite athletes and maintain international standards.”
Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya echoed the sentiment, emphasizing Absa’s critical role in ensuring the event’s success. “We thank Absa for being consistent in supporting athletics in Kenya and, more so, the Kip Keino Classic since its inaugural edition. Their investment reflects the importance of sports alongside other national priorities,” said Mvurya.
With 189 athletes expected, including 53 Kenyans, this year’s edition, to be hosted at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, is poised to be one of the most competitive and well-attended yet, thanks in no small part to Absa’s robust financial support and long-standing commitment to Kenyan athletics.
